Hunza diet: eat raw vegetables and little meat to gain longevity

The Hunza diet is a dietary program based on the famous Pakistani people in the Hunza river valley in the Himalayas, called Hunzacuts. This indigenous group is popular for its diet due to its reputation for long life, with maximum life expectancies of 120 to 140. This makes the Hunza diet attractive to people who are not only looking for a healthier alternative to their current lifestyle, but longevity as well.

Some historical background

This primarily vegetarian diet of the people of the Hunza River Valley, the Hunzacuts, is primarily a consequence of their living conditions. Fuel is scarce in the area, so people have to save most of it for the winter months, the only season when they can cook. As visitors learned about this way of life by visiting these Himalayan villages during the summer, they have attributed the longevity of the Hunzacuts to the vegetarian diet based on simple foods.

The diet

The feeding program consists of simple and unprepared foods. It is important since raw foods are not adulterated, making it more susceptible to fully absorbing its natural goodness. Also, another essential food in this diet is the way sprouted seeds are largely eaten.

Breaking down the nutritional value of the diet, it is mainly made up of natural and unprocessed foods rich in fiber; with forty percent of calories from whole grains, vegetables that provide another thirty percent of calories, ten percent from beans, fifteen percent from fruits, four percent from seeds and nuts, with only one percent from products animals.

An additional charm of the Hunza diet is that there has never been an obese Hunzacut, as they have followed a low-fat raw vegetable diet their entire lives with very little meat.
