What are elementals?

Elementals are considered nature spirits.

There is a lot of mythology and folklore surrounding the subject of elementals, often going into great detail about them. I’m not sure that amount of detail is really necessary.

A simple answer would be that the elementals are intelligent and self-aware entities made from the essence of one of the main elements of life, earth, air, fire and water.

Some sources consider them to be of a completely different “race” than humans. I think they may belong to the angelic realms since they are not from the physical world, or the spirit of someone who has passed from it. I have spent time considering this topic and believe that the angelic hierarchy exists at a higher level of consciousness, beyond the spiritual world and consists of Elementals, Devas, Angels and Archangels, each with an advanced consciousness.

The elementals are invoked for magical purposes and protection rituals and are traditionally one of the following:

gnomes (earth), undines (water), salamanders (fire), sylphs (air)

Some sources also list goblins, fairies, and elves as elementals.

There are also nature spirits called nymphs, often classified in the same category as elementals, but actually considered slightly different. While elementals are the essence of an element, a nymph is the spirit of something. Examples of nymphs are dryads and naiads. Dryads are tree spirits, each tree has its own spirit, or each dryad has its own tree to care for. Naiads are freshwater spirits.

Existing above the elementals and the nymphs, in a more evolved consciousness are the devas. Whereas a dryad would be considered a tree spirit, her deva would be the guardian of the entire forest, almost like a team leader I suppose. Other devas protect sacred sites, mountain ranges, shrines, and places with magical or mystical qualities.

While some people claim to be able to see elementals, I wonder if it is simply a way of translating the energy or life essence that runs through nature when we are aware of it, or a way for the power of nature. to make yourself known to us. As humans, we can’t always put what we feel into words, so we need a way to make sense of it all, and in ancient times, stories were the way that was done. The stories used to describe the essence of nature may have become mythology over time and this is now how some expect to see energy, and they do. Just a thought. Or perhaps the elementals exist and hide in our own gardens, ponds, forests, and streams.
