What’s inside a lifesaver fanny pack?

They are usually red and waterproof. You may have seen them on many life jackets, but have you ever wondered: what exactly is inside a life jacket fanny pack?

Lifeguards have a huge responsibility on their hands. They must be ready to intervene at any moment: their alertness and the equipment they carry with them are actively saving lives!

While on duty, a lifeguard will most often use their whistle. The whistle that a lifeguard wears on a lanyard around his neck must be waterproof and loud enough to be heard over the noise of the pool.

You will always have a rescue tube or rescue board with you, and a first aid kit. It’s the first aid kit that’s the contents of a lifeguard fanny pack!

The contents of a lifeguard fanny pack focus on emergencies that require your immediate attention. A lifeguard fanny pack will typically contain a CPR breathing mask for adults and children, sterile pads, an absorbent pad (rolled gauze) or triangular bandage, gloves, and antiseptic wipes.

These items will provide the lifeguard with everything they need for the initial care of an unresponsive victim, until other lifeguards bring a larger first aid kit and other equipment to the scene. If necessary, a lifeguard fanny pack can go into the water with him.

Whenever a first responder administers first aid, they will wear gloves from their first aid kit. You will apply a body isolation substance to the victim and use the antiseptic wipes for local disinfection.

When administering mouth-to-mouth resuscitation, a lifeguard will place a CPR mask over the victim’s nose and mouth. Antiseptic wipes from your first aid kit can be used to sterilize the mask.

There should be enough gauze in the fanny pack for a lifeguard to control bleeding or other trauma, until other lifeguards get more supplies or 911 arrives. Triangular bandages can be used to create slings and splints in the event of a broken bone.

CPR masks are usually packaged in white triangular cases, so they can be placed inside the fanny pack. Sterile items, such as adhesive bandages, gauze pads, or gauze rolls, should be sealed with waterproof protection. If possible, they should not go into the water at all. They are of no use to the victim while they are still in the water and could be accidentally contaminated.

A lifeguard’s job is to keep everyone safe. A lifeguard fanny pack is the best way to have everything you need to do just that with you at all times.
