Blinds – History and types

Window blinds have so many different types of materials and colors. Today, its uses are for privacy, blocking out sunlight and preventing heat from escaping during cooler seasons.

There are records that the ancients also used shutters. Although they are different in terms of shape, they basically have the same function.

People who live in the desert use damp cloth to cover their windows. Damp cloths were used to cool their houses and block out sunlight. The ancient Egyptians and Chinese used shutters to avoid being seen from the outside, thus giving a sense of privacy.

The Egyptians use strung canes while the Chinese use bamboos. However, bamboos are still used as materials to make blinds. It is commonly seen in Asian countries.

Venetian blinds are said to have come from Persia. Wherein, traveling Venetian merchants brought the blinds to Venice and Paris. Therefore, these 2 countries were credited as the inventors of Venetian blinds.

During the 1950s, Venetian blinds were made from 2-inch-wide metal slats and hung with strips of fabric. The strips of fabric are the ones that control the descent, rise and inclination of the metal slats.

These types of ‘new’ blinds were known to be noisy and less aesthetically pleasing to a room. Then, in the 1980s, the metal slats were replaced with one-inch-wide vinyl slats. And because of vinyl slats’ ease of manufacture, they became the standard choice for window blinds.
