Fix for Fortnite bug "An unreal process collapsed: UE4-FortniteGame"

Fortnite it is powered by what is known as the “Unreal Engine”, a piece of software developed by Epic Games to provide 3D gaming functionality to other developers.

While the Unreal Engine element of the likes of Fortnite is generally kept out of sight by the end user, it is present and an essential part of the likes of Fortnite, PUBG, and other leading games.

Unfortunately, it can be the case that the engine gets damaged or corrupted, leading to weird errors like the “An unreal process collapsed: UE4-FortniteGame“mistake.

Cause

The cause of this error is due to the way that Windows is unable to work with the UnrealEngine application, which is required by Fortnite to work.

The problem is usually caused by configuration issues within Windows (which may include the registry), or integration issues with DirectX and other third-party libraries.

To fix it, you first need to make sure that the Fortnite app is working properly, and then you can clean up any potentially corrupted settings like the Windows registry or other third-party libraries.

Solution

1. Change compatibility settings for Fortnite

The first step is to make sure you have the correct “compatibility” settings for Fortnite.

This is a standard Windows process, which basically allows any version of Windows after 7 to run “older” software (designed for XP, etc.).

  • Press the “Windows” + “E” keys on your keyboard

  • Navigate to “C:/Program Files/Epic Games/Fortnite/FortniteGame/Binaries/Win64”

  • Scroll down to “FortniteClient-Win64-Shipping.exe”

  • The right button of the mouse

  • Select “Properties”

  • In the upper “tabs”, select “Compatibility”

  • Scroll down and check “Disable on-screen optimizations”

  • Click OK

  • Repeat this for any of the “FortniteClient…” EXE files in the /Win64 folder

  • try the game again

2. Use the Fortnite “Verify” cheat

The next step is to try using the “verify” tool from within the Epic Games Launcher.

Doing this is really very simple:

  • If you have exited the “File Explorer” part of Windows, please reload it

  • Find the folder it was in and this time DELETE the file “FortniteClient-Win64…”

  • After doing this, click on “Epic Games Launcher” on your desktop

  • Select “Fortnite”

  • Next to the green “Start” button, select the small gear icon

  • From the dropdown menu, select “Verify”

  • This will perform a scan of your game files.

  • Let the scan finish and make the corrections

  • Reboot your PC and try the game again

3. Change Registry Settings Within Windows

The Windows registry is a central database responsible for storing everything from your desktop wallpaper to the apps you’ve recently used.

As you use your system, various items in this database can become damaged or corrupted, which can lead to errors like the one you are experiencing.

To fix this, you can go in and change any settings that have been identified as the cause of the error:

  • Press the “Windows” + “S” keys on your keyboard

  • Type “Redit”, right click on the first list that appears and select “Run as administrator”

  • Look for the following: “HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlGraphicsDrivers”

  • Right click and select “New” > “REG_DWORD”

  • Change its name to “TdrDelay”

  • Change your data to “00000008”

  • Exit the registry editor

  • Restart your PC

  • try the game again

If the above does not work, it suggests that you have a problem with another aspect of the system.

Unfortunately, since UnrealEngine is built into Fortnite, it’s not something you can manually uninstall without causing more problems.

If you want to give it a try, it’s best to either reinstall the Fortnite game entirely, or if you need further assistance, it’s recommended that you speak to someone who has specific knowledge or experience with your system.

There are several online communities that have the ability to do this: Reddit, SuperUser, and MicrosoftAnswers are the most prolific.

If you use your computer for work, it will probably be more effective to have someone else do the repair for you. Several vendors on Fiverr offer reasonable prices, and of course you have the local market that will be able to come in and provide direct support.
