Get him engaged: how to give him a little push in the right direction

Do you know how to persuade a man to commit? Do you push him too hard or try to demand more from him than he is willing to give? Would you like to find a better way to get what he needs from the relationship without begging? If you are currently struggling to get a man to commit, stop fighting and learn how to gently nudge him in the right direction.

Stop thinking of commitment as a destination and start thinking of it as a process that takes time and patience to unfold. Commitment is built on trust, and it’s never a good idea to blindly give away your trust. Both of you must work to earn each other’s trust by allowing yourself to be vulnerable with each other little by little.

As you work to build more and more trust, learn to communicate honestly about your expectations for the future. If a man ignores you or completely avoids talking about the future, he tries a slightly different approach. Share with him some of his general fears about commitment. Revealing your uncertainty gives him permission to do the same without fear of upsetting you. You may both share some of the same concerns. And obstacles are much easier to overcome when they have been clearly identified. A man may find that just verbalizing his concerns takes power.

Keep certain aspects of yourself exclusively for a committed relationship. The obvious one is sex. But there are other things you should save until a man commits. Going out with other men is always an option until he tells you that he is ready for commitment. Knowing that you are dating other guys or that you have the opportunity to date other guys will drive him crazy. He too should reserve the benefits of cohabitation for commitment. There is no reason why you should get in the habit of doing his laundry, cleaning up after him, or doing his errands for him. You are not his mother or his maid, so don’t act like either of them. You can do these things from time to time as a kind gesture, but it shouldn’t happen often or he’ll take you for granted.
