The challenges to ethical politics: oxymorons, denials, equating opinions with facts!

Many wonder why there often seems to be so little realistic, ethical policy. For some, even putting the word ethical next to political is an oxymoron! Others simply resort to denials, blame, complaints and procrastination. We often witness that people and their elected representatives are not willing to listen and focus, with an open mind and seem to equate their personal opinions, personal/political agenda and self-interest with real facts. ! In recent years, this situation seems to have gotten even worse, and the level of divisive and partisan politics has made a meeting of minds even more challenging to achieve. With that in mind, this article will attempt, briefly, to consider, examine, review, and discuss these obstacles to improving/increasing the level, degree, and consistency of genuine ethics in our political discussions, activities, and policies. politicians

1. Is ethical politics an oxymoron?: Has there ever really been any real ethics in our politics, and is it even possible in the current environment, etc.? Is this concept simply an unattainable oxymoron? After more than four decades of involvement in all kinds of leadership, as well as working on various political campaigns, I sincerely hope and believe that it is achievable, but it is a challenge because, of many factors, perhaps most significantly, the power , the apparent necessity and influence of money in the American political system.

two. denials; blaming; whining; delay: While perhaps it is human nature to resort to denial and personal responsibility, and even blame others and complain, it is rarely helpful in any way possible! When, instead of proceeding in a well-considered, timely and open-minded manner, too many politicians seem to resort to procrastination, while emphasizing their personal/political agenda and/or self-interest. – interest, instead of the greater good!

3. Opinions versus facts: Although everyone is entitled to their personal opinions, they are not entitled to their own set of facts! When the former President’s Spokesman used the expression, Alternative Facts, to justify this mentality and behavior, it indicates a constantly deteriorating system and reality! It seems, this has spread, to the general public, especially to certain core followers, who, consistently, unintentionally, proceed with an open mind! How can we expect, any possibility of political ethics, when our system focuses on division and polarization, instead of unification, etc.

Shouldn’t the intention and result of politics be to achieve a better system, one that focuses on common sense, the greater good, and a meaningful commitment to seek an essential meeting of minds? Yes, we hope, to change this atmosphere, we need to change the system in general, and make it better, and more truly responsive!
