The truth about personal training: an industry insider speaks his mind

Fitness is a huge industry. Many unscrupulous people seek to gain a piece of the industry by withholding essential information or simply giving out bad information. Sometimes these bogus fitness businesses get into trouble for their actions, but most of the time, there are no consequences. It is the responsibility of the consumer to be informed so that he can avoid damage. This report was made so that those looking to get in shape can learn the usual tactics employed by disreputable fitness companies and therefore avoid them. Research fitness programs that sound interesting to you, and keep these red flags in mind.

They advocate the extreme use of supplements

After paying a large registration fee, fitness programs often expect you to pay more for wasteful supplements. As is often the case with these scams, they lure customers with promises of an ideal body shape in a short period of time at low cost. After being admitted, the consumer is often faced with the need to purchase supplements at a high cost. Be aware of all costs before you sing anything. As tedious as it is, it’s important to read the fine print. Ask up front if all costs include food, supplements, and other extras. It can be shocking what the actual cost of a diet regimen can be.

They claim you can lose a pound a day

With the right advice, it is absolutely possible to lose a significant amount of weight safely in a short period of time. However, there is no way that losing a pound a day is safe. That kind of weight loss will put you at great risk for gallstones. which are not only painful, but may also require surgery. So, not only will you get a scar on your midsection, but you will also have a huge hospital bill. When advertisers claim that you can lose weight at a rate of 3 to 4 pounds per week, be very cautious in how you proceed. The plan may include steady cardio or consumption of 1,200 calories or less per day. Painful fitness experiences like these are very likely to result in you failing the weight loss plan entirely and gaining the weight you initially lost.

They provide personal trainers with very little background information

Sometimes gyms are vague or give you little to no information about the personal trainers on the premises. This is a big red flag because it means they are reluctant to take responsibility for their trainer’s actions. Only later will you discover that your personal trainer can’t tell you the definition of the word “calorie,” can’t tell the difference between a dumbbell and a heavy stone, and does little more during training sessions than count your reps. Most trainers aren’t really qualified and that’s how many gyms handle that problem. There are websites that even sell personal training “certificates” to those without credentials. Stay tuned and make sure your trainer knows what he is doing.

They claim to have the best abs equipment

This makes no sense. A solid six pack can be achieved with regular ab exercises along with a resistance training regimen, a healthy diet, and consistent cardio. No equipment is necessary to transform your abs into a solid six pack.

In the 1990s, Fitness Quest Inc. was in considerable trouble for its unsubstantiated claims about the ab machines they produced. His claims included that his machine was twice as effective as sit-ups, as well as that his other machines were capable of burning “1000 calories per hour.” Consequently, they were ordered to stop making these claims, or else they would incur fines of $11,000 for each violation. The reality is that equipment that works your abs can make it take you longer to hit a six pack.

The American Council on Exercise conducted a study in 2001 to find the most effective abdominal exercises. The study compared the ab machines in TV infomercials to no-equipment exercises. With EMG equipment (used to test and record electrical activity produced by skeletal muscles) they discovered amazing things. Most ab exercises that use equipment are not as effective as exercises without equipment, and the most effective ab exercises found use no equipment at all. The study found that the “bicycle” is one of the best and most effective exercises. You use not only the muscle responsible for the six-pack (your rectus abdominis), but you also strengthen your entire core. To do the bicycle correctly, take your fingers and interlace them behind your head while lying on your back. Draw your knees toward your chest, and then lift your shoulders off the floor. Straighten your right leg and turn your body to the left, while bringing your right elbow in.

towards his left knee. Then switch sides, bringing your left elbow toward your right knee as you extend your left leg. He repeat 12 times.

The FTC does prosecute some fitness scams, but that’s not always the case. Often these scam companies are never penalized. File your report with the FTC and BBB in a timely manner if you think you are a victim of one of these scams. The sad state of affairs is that all too often this will not lead to these offices taking action, however, with enough complaints, they just might take notice.

So how do you achieve the body you want?

Fitness is a complicated undertaking, but it boils down to the basics: eat right, exercise correctly, and get enough rest. An exercise program should balance cardio and resistance training. Cardio exercise burns more calories per minute, however resistance training such as weight lifting will increase your metabolism and lead to more weight burn throughout the day.

Include variety in your diet so you don’t get bored of eating the same things. Make sure your diet contains mostly vegetables, whole grains, fruits, and plenty of lean protein. Give yourself indulgence in your favorite fatty or sugary foods, so you don’t feel like you’re being deprived. It is not sustainable to have a diet that makes you feel hungry or stressed all the time. Your diet should allow enough caloric deficit to burn fat and enough protein to build muscle. You should also include enough fun foods so that you can lead a normal life.

Don’t underestimate how important it is to rest, both getting enough sleep and taking exercise breaks. Your muscles need 8 hours of sleep to repair themselves properly. Sleep also helps you have enough energy to exercise without which your entire exercise plan will suffer. You need some occasional rest days from exercising, or else you can overtrain and stunt your fitness regimen. That is a real method to become and stay in shape.
