Types of Female Modeling Jobs

Everyone thinks that all female models are like Gisele Bundchen, Heidi Klum, or Naomi Campbell, but the fact is that there are several types of famous models, who you probably ignore, who are making excellent incomes. Most of them are working what is called ‘behind the scenes’ as setting, showroom and commercial models. They are working in a wide range of companies, I can name a few of them here: pharmaceuticals, fitness, suppliers, manufacturers, airlines and many others.

Surely you can fit into these categories, it does not matter if you cannot be in the supermodel category, I am going to list all the types of modeling so that you can identify yourself in one or more of them:

Fashion Writing.

Fashion models or also known as editorial models are the type of models you see in magazines like: Harper’s Bazaar, Vogue, Elle, etc. They work for the best fashion designers such as: Prada, Gucci, Giorgio Armani, Marc Jacobs, among others. These types of professionals are between 5’9″ and 6’0″ tall and are also very skinny. Her measurements are bust 33″, waist 23″, hips 33″.

Most of the time, modeling agencies look for what they call ‘the complete package’ when deciding if they can be editorial models, however, don’t be discouraged if you don’t meet the exact stats they ask for.

Catwalk or Catwalk.

These models are usually 5′ 9″, however 5′ 10” – 5′ 11” is considered much better. They have to have the exact measurements, because they have to fit well with the clothes that the designers are going to show them respective clients.

Designers hire models to fit the clothes they made for their respective collections, so they don’t make their clothes fit the model, the only exception to this rule is when the model is someone like Naomi Campbell.

Commercial.

These types of professionals can be of any age, height or size. They can practically do anything, as long as it is not related to what is known as haute couture. Some examples: food products, technological devices, travel industry, etc.

Plus size.

This is a market that has become a really important part of the fashion and commercial modeling industry. Fashion agencies have a special division for this type of model. In fact, there are very famous plus-size supermodels.

More often than not, these types of professionals are determined by size rather than exact measurements, such as a size 12. A size 12 is not considered a plus size model in the real world, but in modeling it is.

Small.

These types of professionals are most of the time 5’7” and under. Most of the time, these types of professionals do not do runway work, they are reserved for lingerie and swimwear and part modeling as well. Because these professionals have gloves and smaller screen sizes, they are hired as hand and foot models.

Lingerie and Swimsuit.

These types of professionals are curvier and also more voluptuous than editorial models. Swimsuit models have a wide range of job possibilities, they are always hired to make swimsuit models. You can model underwear, summer clothes, nightwear, lingerie, etc. They can also be other types of models such as adjustment models.

Glamor.

These types of professionals are most of the time even curvier than editorial fashion models. They also work in swimsuit and lingerie modeling. Modeling type refers to the type of pose the models strike in their photos. Glamor modeling is considered sexually suggestive and also attractive compared to fashion modeling. The girls who pose for Playboy magazines, for example, are glamorous models.

Physical aptitude.

These types of professionals are fit, athletic and toned. Many of these models start out as trainers or athletes and include fitness modeling on their CV. They work for: supplement manufacturers, sportswear companies, and fitness companies. They are, most of the time, commercial models too.

Fit.

It is important not to confuse this type of professional with fitness models. Fit models work behind the scenes. They work with garment manufacturers and fashion houses. These companies use these models to make sure that the fit and size are actually maintained in what is called “the clothing manufacturing process.”

Garment manufacturing companies need a wide range of sizes and also shapes of these models, in order to fit their garments correctly before they reach the final consumer.

If you are a woman who can maintain her measurements, this type of modeling is perfect for you.

Body parts.

These types of professionals work modeling specific parts of the body: feet, hands, eyes and legs.

Hand: It can work for nails, jewelry, and beauty related products as well. Customer use to hire these models on film or print.

Football: being hired mainly by shoe companies, but also by beauty and nail products. Also everywhere else the perfect feet are required.

Most of the time petite models are hired by part models, due to their smaller body parts.
