Understanding why beagles growl and how to make them stop

Addressing your puppy’s growling problem is vital to a happy and healthy bond with your puppy. Although Beagles are usually friendly and very sociable, they also develop growling behaviors in certain situations. This doesn’t have to be a big problem if you know what to do to address the problem, but you will have to find out what is causing the growls.

Why do beagles growl?

As with any other behavior problem, growling is easier to address when your Beagle dog is young. If your dog has started growling at you during certain times, you haven’t established that you are the leader yet. If your dog sees himself as his equal, he will growl and demonstrate dominance.

Many times, failing to establish your position as a leader will lead to grunting problems even if they are not directed at you. Beagles growl at visitors because they have a need to protect what they think is territory. If you are the leader, they will wait to see how you react before reacting. If you are friendly, they will do the same. You should also consider that your puppy may be sick or injured. When a puppy is in pain, he often reacts out of fear that you will do something to hurt him more.

When your Beagle growls in these situations you should not react badly or punish him. Take them in to have your injury fixed and avoid anything that could make it worse.

Correcting the growls

If your Beagle growls for any reason other than being sick or injured, you must do something to fix the problem. Often asserting yourself as the alpha will eliminate any growling problems that are occurring. It will not be easy and it will take some time, but it will correct behavior problems that need to be corrected.

Socialize your beagle early

Beagles often growl when threatened. If a Beagle hasn’t spent a lot of time with other dogs and people, they will naturally feel threatened when they come into contact with dogs or people they don’t know. This is why it is so important that your dog is around other animals and people. Over time, your puppy will become comfortable with everyone, and you will have a lot less trouble to handle when people and dogs come to visit them or when you visit them.
