Wheatgrass Bloat Kills Livestock: Is Wheat Gluten Linked to Obesity and Bloat Epidemic?

WHEAT DIET KILLS LIVESTOCK

Cattle fed exclusively on wheat often die of a bloat disorder known as wheatgrass bloat, feeder bloat, free gas bloat, or foamy bloat. Wheat and barley are fed to cattle because they are a cheap source of high-protein grains. These grains result in rapid weight gain to finish cattle for slaughter. However, if too much wheat or barley is fed to cattle, especially wheat that is high in gluten, the cattle can die. For this reason, the livestock industry knows how to mix the feed with other cereals.

WHAT IS SHEPHERD SWELLING AND DO WE EXPERIENCE SOMETHING SIMILAR?

In pasture bloat, the stomach, or rumen, as it is called in cattle, accumulates excess gas that puts pressure on the heart and lungs and leads to death. I have patients who tell me they feel like they are dying from the pain and swelling they experience. Some have even said they wish someone would pierce their stomach to let all the gas out. Most no longer feel this way after starting a gluten-free or wheat-free diet. Your bleeding is gone.

A PERSONAL STORY ABOUT PASTURE SWELLING

My wife grew up in rural Missouri. Her family had cattle. When I asked her if she had ever heard of pasture bloat, she told me a story about how she tried to help the local vet save one of her cows that developed pasture bloat. Despite puncturing the cow’s stomach letting gas escape, the cow died anyway.

GASSY HORSES FED ON BARLEY HOPS

While horseback riding with my daughter recently, the guide complained that the horses would stop to pass gas and release green feces, releasing “we think it’s the hops.” The ranch sources discarded hops from the local brewery which they feed to their horses. Gluten-containing hops are giving horses gas and loose stools!

DIFFICULTY LOSING WEIGHT LINKED TO WHEAT GLUTEN IN THE DIET

Many of my patients also complain of not being able to lose weight. However, a dietary history reveals that, like most Americans now, they get more than 20% of their daily calories from gluten-containing carbohydrates. If the livestock industry knows that wheat and barley grains rapidly fatten cattle, we should not be surprised by the obesity epidemic in our high-grain, high-carbohydrate diet. In contrast, overweight and obese people who follow a gluten-free diet frequently lose weight.

CAN YOU BE OVERWEIGHT OR OBESIVE AND HAVE CELIAC DISEASE?

Many people who have celiac disease are overweight or obese. Unfortunately, your diagnosis is often missed due to the misperception that you can’t have celiac disease if you’re overweight. this is false. Many people with undiagnosed celiac disease are overweight and more constipated. However, they usually have severe swelling symptoms.

THE MYSTERY OF LOW-CARB OR ATKIN DIET SUCCESS EXPLAINED

The low-carb diet, by nature a low-gluten diet, is so successful because people lose weight and notice that their headaches, fatigue, muscle aches, brain fog, and bloating are better. They lose weight and feel better. Therefore, they are motivated to continue. However, the reintroduction of carbohydrates, especially those that are high in gluten, results in weight gain and a feeling of well-being. However, going gluten-free can be difficult. There are cultural issues, rising costs, and other issues that need to be overcome.

THE ADDICTIVE NATURE OF GLUTEN-CONTAINING CARBOHYDRATES

In addition, gluten has addictive properties. Gluten breaks down into morphine-like proteins called gliadomorphins or gluten exorphins. These well-characterized chemicals have many effects, including addictive properties and impaired function.

WHY INCREASING FIBER IN YOUR DIET MAY WORSE YOUR SYMPTOMS ESPECIALLY GAS AND BLOOMING

My gastrointestinal training led me for years to advise people, especially those with irritable bowel syndrome and diverticulosis, to eat plenty of whole grains and take fiber supplements. This is also the recommendation of the United States government in our Food Pyramid. Over time, I stopped recommending whole grains and some fiber supplements because many patients complained of increased bloating, gas, and abdominal discomfort. As an expert in celiac disease, I realize that recommendations for whole grains and fiber supplements that contain gluten are not only unhelpful but also harmful to many people.

STICKY MUCUS IN YOUR STOOLS, DO YOU FEEL BLOATED? JOIN THE LIVESTOCK INDUSTRY

Feedlot bloat usually results in a slimy, foamy coating of the cattle’s stomach (rumen). I often see this mucus or slimy layer on the surface of my patients’ small intestines when I perform an endoscopy. I suspect this may be due to excess carbohydrates in the diet. The accumulation of intestinal gases in cattle is due to their inability to burp (burp). Some animals get sick and must be euthanized early. Increased bacterial production has been implicated. Fermentation of these grains is also believed to be involved. The excessive protein content of some wheats like high-gluten winter wheat is also to blame. Wheat ferments faster and much more than barley, sorghum or corn.

WHAT THE LIVESTOCK INDUSTRY WON’T TELL YOU BUT NEITHER YOUR DOCTOR

So why is wheat fed to cattle? it is cheap. Produces very rapid weight gain and more weight gain than other cereals. However, great care must be taken when using wheat to fatten cattle. Supplements are required because wheat alone can result in low calcium levels which can cause grass tetany, a form of muscle spasms or paralysis. An exclusive or very high wheat diet can cause ruminant acidosis (high acid levels in the blood) which is also fatal to cattle.

Does your diet consist of large amounts of calories from wheat and carbohydrates that contain gluten? Are you overweight and constantly feeling bloated, experiencing unexplained muscle cramps and pain, headaches, balance difficulties and abdominal pain? Perhaps you should learn from the cattle industry, as doctors may not be telling you the truth about the dangers of a grain-based diet.
